Dual Star Grip Heaters Product Review Well I finally got some heated grips to install, and let me say, its the best $30 I've spent on the bike yet. I wish I did this a long time ago. Thanks to some other listers the install was relatively easy, and I got heat on the first try. I did want to point out some observations though. 1. The Dual-Star units claim superiority over Kimpex because they require no extra resistors or anything to make up for the throttle tube insulation effect. I have noticed however that there is a slight bit of extra heat from the right unit then the left, so it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to throw a quick round of electrical tape or something around the left tube before sticking the grip on there. However even on low, both grips can get uncomfortably hot very quickly, so its definately not worth it to me to go through the trouble of taking them off and doing it over again. If anything I would like to find a way to make the right unit not throw out quite so much heat. 2. The only things I actually used from the kit, were the elements. I didn't like the switch that came with it, but I found a much better one at a local auto parts store. Black plastic instead of a silver metal. Blends much more nicely into the dash. Also fits flush without to much trouble, and its smaller and easier to switch. Might even be a little more waterproof from the looks of it. 3. I also found at the same auto parts store, a bussed blade style fuse block. I found a non-bussed, glass tube style at radio shack, but didn't like it. This was much better. 4. Zip ties are one of the worlds greatest inventions. Right up there with duck tape, and the wheel. 5. I have no space left under my seat, but everything fit, including my power commander that was already there, without having to remove my tool kit. 6. The heat-troller variable heat controller unit they sell, for $50, is not worth it. On low the grips can throw out a slightly uncomfortable amount of heat at times. On high I think they would probably burn my hands. Low or off will probably be the only ones I use. and $50 to be able to adjust it slightly lower to be more comfortable, isn't justifiable. They arn't THAT hot on low. If I could find the same device for $10 bucks, I might go for it. 7. This will probably be the first modification I do to any future bike. 8. Kimpex has the option of buying just the elements, I might try this next time around, seeing how I got everything else from radio shack and an auto parts store anyway. I do like though that the dual-star units have the wires molded into the element. Much more sturdy looking I think. Nathan Framingham, MA
