New Mexico Roads of Interest Anyone interested in New Mexico places of interest. Southwest Corner: State route 152 to Silver City. You will climb up to Emory Pass and connect with Route 180. Gila Cliff dewlings off of Route 180 Glenwood, NM on Route 180 then to St Rt 159 to Mogollon,NM (old mining town with Silver Creek BB Inn very pleasent and quite). Rt 180 to St Rt 12 to St Rt 32 to Quemado to St Rt 36 to St Rt 117. 117 will get you through to the El Malpais National Monument also from I40 you can pick up 117 just east of Grants. (Volcanic flows and sandstone bluffs, La Ventana Natural Arch and the Narrows are some sites of interest). South East Corner: >From I25 take Rt 380 through the Vally of the Fires. Continue to Capitan and Lincoln (Billy the Kid and Lincoln county war monument). Connect to go to Ruidoso,NM. >From Ruidoso take St Rt 244 to Cloudcroft (mountainous and senic) continue to Rt 82 and head to Artesia (smelly area due to cattle/natural gas fields) but continue to Carlsbad (Caverns just south). Best to hit Carlsbad in early part of year of later part of summer due to the heat. Northern NM: Enchanted Circle is around Taos, NM Rt 64. Taos to Eagle Nest to Red River to Questa and back to Taos. There are many way to get to Taos. From ABQ go north on I25 to Santa Fe and then take Rt 285 North To St Rt 68 or before 68 take St Rt 503 to Chimayo. (Chimayo has the El Santurio de Chimayo which is of interest). Other roads from Chimayo are St Rt 76 through Truchas to Vadito. From Vadito turn east on St Rt 518 and head to Mora. At Mora take St Rt 434 to Rt 64 which is part of the Enchanted Circle and will drop you out around Angel Fire. Most of these route are through senic mountainous terrain. Mick McHam April 9, 2003
