Medical Evacuation Insurance for Overseas Travel

Mike Paull, a GS'r from Seattle, WA here. Some of you know me, and also
now that I was an enthusiastic (but "truncated") participant in Helge
Pedersen's Globeriders Tour 2002. On 16 MAY, I was involved in an
accident in Dezhou, China, about a five-hour drive south of Beijing.
Some of you have been on my BLOG and already have read about this ad
nauseum. However, if you haven't, and you're interested:

- The TUE 04 edition of the Seattle Times will have an article on this
in Eric Lacitis' column. I'll post a follow-up with the online link
when it's available.

- I have a Horizons Unlimited webpage with more info than you'll ever
want to know at:

My health insurance should reimburse me for the medical costs involved,
but, few policies cover more than a fee thousand dollars, if that, for
"transport and ambulance services". Just prior to departing the States,
I purchased an "evacuation and repatriation" policy from MEDJET
Assistance. Their company, and the services they offer, are wholly
responsible for notifying my family and doctors, transporting me from a
"primitive" hospital in Dezhou City, Shandong Province, China, to a more
modern one in Beijing, then, from Beijing to the hospital of my choice
(the U of W Medical Center in Seattle, WA). At the time, I purchased a
family policy for $275/year (an individual was $175/year). The total
costs for my evacuation - $21,000.00, which they've covered, and I
didn't even have to fill out any paperwork, or make any advance payment
to be reimbursed later. No one plans to be injured far away from home.
It happens. Do yourself and your loved ones a favor and take out a
policy if there's even a REMOTE chance that you'll need these types of
services should you be hospitalized far from home. You can sign up on
line. MEDJET Assistance's website (not to be confused with MEDJET,
which is a different company) is at:
