Wear Your Safety Gear sunday morning i was heading home on the st1100 from mtn. home arkansas, south on hwy 5 near allison arkansas. i had been following a couple cars not quite running the 55 mph speed limit. finally i saw a long straight without the solid yellow and as i came over the crest of the hill i saw one oncoming car in the distance. no problem full throttle in third gear makes very quick passes. as i'm along side the first of the two cars i discover i wasn't really at the crest of the hill yet. you can imagine my shock when suddenly there is a car heading right at me and very close. i hit the brakes trying to squeeze back into the right lane. i locked the front brake and i remember trying to keep the bike under control, probably for a nano second or two. the bike went down and i tumbled for what seemed like a long time, knowing there was also a bike tumbling in the same general vicinity not to mention the cars. when i stopped tumbling i was in the right lane and kind of slithered off to the shoulder still not sure where cars might be going. i forced myself to stop and make sure all hands and feet seemed moveable before i attempted to sit up. upon sitting up i discovered my left glove had come off and my hand was quite bloody. it felt painfully cold like i had stuck it in ice water too long. the lady driving the oncoming car was the first at my side. i told her that other than my hand i felt ok but i couldn't hear her because i had ear plugs in. following my instructions she carefully removed my helmet and ear plugs. then she told me sorry about the bike but she had to choose between hitting me or the bike. i thanked her for a wise decision. damage to me - slight fracture of the left wrist and road rash on the left hand. a couple small cuts on the right hand. assorted minor bumps and bruises. hell the tetnus shot hurts more than anything else. riding gear - shoei rf800, top vent and rightside latches and hinges sheared off. a small piece of the face shield remains on th left. the right side of the helmet is scraped a lot. aerostich roadcrafter with hip pads and back protector is scuffed on the right side and back. the outer shell in a couple of places is worn down to the smooth inner liner. the inner linner looks untouched in those spots. olympia leather gloves with kevlar. the elastic in the wrist was not enough to keep the left one on. the right also had started to come off. justin lace up work boots. the leather on the right toe is ripped open exposing the hard toe protector. both sides are scaped deeply. the bike - can you say munched. it looks like the back took the worst hit. i can't say enough nice things about the people that stopped, the emt and er people and even the sherrif not to mention the moto buddy that came and got me at mtn view hospital, put me up and ferried me to memphis for a flight home. several of hospital staff heard about the accident, came in to see how i was and left talking about buying a 'stich. never even had a chance to try those heli-bars i bought.
